چکیده

Simple board games, like Tic-Tac-Toe and CONNECT-4, play an important role not only in the development of mathematical and logical skills, but also in the emotional and social development. In this paper, we address the problem of generating targeted starting positions for such games. This can facilitate new approaches for bringing novice players to mastery, and also leads to discovery of interesting game variants. We present an approach that generates starting states of varying hardness levels for player 1 in a two-player board game, given rules of the board game, the desired number of steps required for player 1 to win, and the expertise levels of the two players. Our approach leverages symbolic methods and iterative simulation to efficiently search the extremely large state space. We present experimental results that include discovery of states of varying hardness levels for several simple gridbased board games. The presence of such states for standard game variants like 4 × 4 Tic-Tac-Toe opens up new games to be played that have never been played as the default start state is heavily biased.

Towards the Next Generation of Tabletop Gaming Experiences

In this paper we present a novel hardware and software platform (STARS) to realize computer augmented tabletop games that unify the strengths of traditional board games and computer games. STARS game applications preserve the social situation of traditional board games and provide a tangible interface with physical playing pieces to facilitate natural interaction. The virtual game components of...

From Simple Features to Sophisticated Evaluation Functions

This paper discusses a practical framework for the semi{ automatic construction of evaluation functions for games. Based on a structured evaluation function representation, a procedure for exploring the feature space is presented that is able to discover new features in a computational feasible way. Besides the theoretical aspects, related practical issues such as the generation of training pos...

Automatic Test Generation For Digital Circuits

Current VLSI manufacturing processes suffer from larger defective parts ratio, partly due to numerous emerging defect types. While traditional fault models, such as the stuck at and transition delay fault models are still widely used, they have been shown to be inadequate to handle these new defects. The main aim is to develop a complete behavioral fault simulation and automatic test pattern ge...

Evolutionary Search in the Space of Rules for Creation of New Two-Player Board Games

Games have always been a popular test bed for artificial intelligence techniques. Game developers are always in constant search for techniques that can automatically create computer games minimizing the developer's task. In this work we present an evolutionary strategy based solution towards the automatic generation of two player board games. To guide the evolutionary process towards games, whi...
